Artist Statement

A large portion of my work is three-dimensional, focusing in sculpture. I utilize casting, fabrication, and reductive processes using a variety of materials. These include steel alloys, copper, iron, and various woods. My work typically develops from my understanding of the available tools, as I have a deep fascination for mechanical objects and motor vehicles. Originally working with just wood, I progressed in my studies at Ohio Wesleyan, and picked up new skills in metalwork and was able to create more complex forms in my art. It is important to me that these forms follow the functions and the geometry of the work, as well as the color choices and patinas. I find that work that fills a purpose and can also possess aesthetic qualities is the most appealing to my design and method process. With my pieces I am trying to convey this idea to others, and my final works are often abstract yet balanced in this concept.

This also extends into my two-dimensional works in photography and printmaking. I focus strongly on composition and shape relationships, largely influenced by machinery and sculpture. My process for printmaking involves photographing machine parts, layering and editing them in Photoshop, and transferring ideas into etching. This manipulation creates a unique abstraction of related impressions of the engineering behind the mechanics, which is then blended with choices of contrast and texture.

My exploration in my artwork continues to grow as I begin to incorporate new techniques and design into fully functioning works of machinery. In these pieces I hope to draw people to appreciate the value of craftsmanship in what are typically factory productions.
