Artist Statement

Photography resonates strongly with me by offering a way to translate what I see into something tangible. It is a way of preservation, by locking moments in place, it allows for a different viewpoint of appreciation and contemplation that informs the other media I work with. Through observation and acquired knowledge of my subject matter, primarily people and landscapes, I am able to establish a sense of intimacy between myself, the camera, and the subject. Iā€™m interested in creating works that evoke emotion and create connections to the viewer ā€” many times by presenting the beauty that occurs naturally in the world. Many of my influences have been the photographers from the earlier half of the 20th century, such as Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, as well as the dramatic subject of the California central coast ā€” while simultaneously absorbing the works of many prolific portraitists. I am intrigued to learn how the world interacts with the lens and explore the extent to which it may be shown in different aspects. Ultimately, this results in a deeper understanding of both the subject matter and my own intent. By endeavoring in an ever-learning process of observation, I am allowed to disconnect and reconnect to myself and the world. I seek to translate what does not seem to be there and render it into a visible artifact captured from my own perspective.
