Artist Statement

It is noticeable that my art is not centered around one specific theme. The subjects vary and there is more than one medium. There aren’t many similar subjects and there is reasoning for this. The career I am striving for is to be an educator. In the arts to be specific. Teachers explore a multitude of subjects, especially art teachers. From different techniques, different eras, and different artists. My work demonstrates a soon-to-be art teacher becoming familiar with things that I can teach my own students. My art portrays a teacher as an artist.
Like teachers, my process begins with planning. With any medium I use, typically paint, charcoal, and graphite, I begin by sketching out ideas. With a goal of obtaining more knowledge, I tend to practice various techniques and styles within my art. By exploring various techniques and styles and also studying artists and their works, I am able to share my exploration and teach my students. I’ve discovered that it is difficult to juggle being a teacher and an artist but it’s important to make time for your art, no matter how little time it may be. Not only does it provide an escape from the job but creating art also provides more opportunities for me to find my artistic voice.
