Artist Statement

While concentrating in sculpture and drawing, the purpose of my work has been to navigate the intersection between two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality. I believe that the ability to understand art is supported by cross-disciplinary practice, and I find that my work in one discipline influences my work in another. By choosing two very different concentrations, my creative process in joining the two is just as much a part of the end result of my work as the piece itself. I let my exploration of the medium and subject matter guide my decisions. There is also a deep rooted desire to create as well as grow and develop my work as an artist.
The work that I have chosen for this show is heavy with human figure subject matter, which is ironic because I have always avoided the human form and face. I did this because I felt I couldn’t do perfect justice for something so beautiful, natural and singular. Finding my own style and realizing that perfection isn’t required, allowed me to approach the human form as I saw it. The end result of this development can be seen in my paper figures. What started as an experiment to bridge the gap between two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality, ended up becoming a central part of my work. In using paper, I am able to transform something so universal and delicate into something that interacts with space. Paper has taught me its forgiving nature as well as the challenges it poses.
